KUALA LUMPUR – PKR state youth chiefs have allegedly signed a memorandum objecting to the entry of fledgling party Muda into the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition.
In a signed memorandum sighted by The Vibes, the youth leaders stated that Muda adds no value to the coalition as they target the same voter demographics as PKR.
The youth leaders also alleged that Muda tends to target urban or semi-urban seats and its entry into PH would only complicate seat negotiations among component parties.
The leaders also stated that Muda’s clash with their party at the Larkin seat during the Johor election is also proof that it only wishes to target “winnable seats”.
“The lack of value compounded with the overlap in seat allocations will further complicate negotiations within PH heading into the election, while Muda’s objective and strength remain deeply in question,” the memorandum stated.
The memorandum also alleged that Muda’s entry would signal that the coalitions’ youth wings are weak and not trusted to lead their respective parties in the future.
Its entry would also elevate Muda’s status as a full-fledged component party and give its president Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman the same status as other party leaders, such as PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, in the PH presidential council.
This would ruin the coalition’s leadership dynamics and insult the coalition’s youth wing as they do not receive the same decision-making power, according to the memorandum.
The memorandum stated that Muda’s entry into PH will likely be rejected by the grassroots, similar to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s entry into the coalition prior to 2018.
The memorandum also alleged that if Muda were to be accepted in PH, the party would likely pressure PKR to give more of its winnable seats.
The youth leaders said that PH should avoid forming alliances of coalition out of convenience, and should learn its lesson from the infamous Sheraton Move that saw the collapse of the PH administration due to party hopping.
The memorandum alleged that Syed Saddiq was among those involved during the Sheraton Move and questioned whether he would accept Anwar as the coalition’s prime minister candidate. – The Vibes, October 4, 2022
