KUALA LUMPUR – The Department of Environment (DoE) has carried out 193 inspections and imposed 214 enforcement actions on industrial premises near Sg Kim Kim, Sg Daing and Sg Kopok in Johor, said Deputy Environment and Water Minister Datuk Dr Ahmad Masrizal Mohamad.

According to the Parliament Hansard dated November 24, the Masrizal had said the DoE issued stop orders on two premises and 10 investigation papers had been prepared for the purpose of prosecution.

Other enforcement actions included 52 warning notices and 150 compounds.

Masrizal said: “From the enforcement aspect, the DoE will increase surveillance and enforcement through the Environmental Quality Act 1974 by inspecting pollution sources in relevant locations and will work closely with the state government and local enforcement agencies.”

He added that enforcement agencies will conduct surveillance through conventional patrols and aerial surveillance via drones.

Masrizal said his ministry will also amend the Environmental Quality Act 1974 to increase penalties from RM100,000 to RM10 million, and a mandatory prison term not exceeding five years.

He was asked about the issue by Steven Choong Shiau Yoon (PH-Tebrau) following pollution in Kg Perigi Acheh in Johor.

Choong said 60 fishermen live in the area and their source of income has been ruined due to river pollution in the Sg Kim Kim, Sg Daing and Sg Kopok tributary. – The Vibes, November 30, 2020
