KOTA KINABALU – More than 400 families on Gaya Island recently exchanged rubbish they had collected for food baskets under a new programme organised by nine civil society groups with the support of private companies.
The villagers collected about 400 25kg bags of rubbish from the island itself for the Trash 4 Food programme.
Skuad Komuniti Prihatin Sabah Association chairman Mohd Taufik Ismail said the programme was a way to educate the community on maintaining cleanliness while providing the villagers much needed aid.
The programme saw 30 volunteers from Yayasan Ikram Malaysia, Sahabat Amal Care, Persatuan Skuad Komuniti Prihatin Sabah, Amanah Hawi AlKhairat Sabah, Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia Sabah, Yayasan Ikram Malaysia, Sahabat Amal Care, Helping Orang Pedalaman, Global Peace Malaysia, Majlis Belia Sabah and Malaysia For Syria Care involved in food distribution efforts.
Around 1,000 masks were also donated to the islanders during the programme.
Local company Jetsin Sdn Bhd, led by managing director Koh Chung Jade, also donated two frozen chickens per family while another company donated sports drinks.
Koh said he hoped the contributions will assist in alleviating the villagers' needs and serve as an inspiration for other companies to chip in to such efforts. – The Vibes, November 30, 2020
