KUALA LUMPUR – The government is taking its first step towards separating the powers of the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) and the role of the public prosecutor, said law minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
In a Facebook post, Azalina said she held a meeting with the AGC, which had resulted in the plans to make the changes.
“Yesterday, I met with the AGC, which is led by solicitor-general Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh, to discuss the separation of powers between the attorney-general and public prosecutor,” said the Pengerang MP in her post.
“Following this discussion, the AGC will prepare a plan for its alterations,” she added.
Azalina stated that the meeting was only the beginning of the entire process, adding that she hoped the collaboration between the two parties will bear fruit soon.
“This is the first step towards separating the power of the attorney-general and public prosecutor, and I hope the good cooperation between the AGC and the law & institution reform minister’s office will produce results as soon as possible, Insya-Allah,” she said.
After her recent appointment as law minister, Azalina pledged to address regulations that were archaic and ensure that amendments are made in order to align the country’s laws with current times.
A law she aims to address is the separation of powers between the attorney-general and public prosecutor, which she says is to preserve the independence of the latter’s discretion. – The Vibes, December 7, 2022
