KUALA LUMPUR – The Communications and Digital Ministry will be keeping an eye on two “sick” government projects involving Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), said minister Fahmi Fadzil.
Speaking during a press conference after visiting RTM today, Fahmi said the agency’s buildings in Bintulu and Langkawi are considered “sick projects” due to their long-standing incomplete status.
“I believe that the chief of the Broadcasting Department has gone to visit the delayed projects and emphasis was given on the projects’ completion.
“I have not yet gone to see the sites myself but I hope that it will be possible to see a direction for the projects soon.
“If the buildings are left uncompleted for much longer, then this will affect the work (of disseminating information to the public) in the locations.”
Fahmi said the projects are under the purview of the Public Works Department with the ministry’s oversight.
While he was unable to disclose the details of the projects during his press conference, he was confident the matter would be resolved soon with the cooperation of the relevant agencies.
Besides that, the PKR information chief said one of his main goals as a minister is to make sure that RTM, a local broadcast agency, is “future ready”.
Vowing to ensure that RTM’s content will be relevant and up to date, Fahmi said he will be checking in on all government media agencies to make sure they are on the same page.
“We must change our mindsets (to accept that) content is now something that can be aired on various platforms.
“What’s important is that we can make our message go viral. We have to change with the times.”
Additionally, he said the ministry will be looking into what can be immediately done to improve telecommunications access in Sabah and Sarawak.
“The issue is not only about access to networks, but also about the facilities, such as telecommunication towers (in East Malaysia).
“We will analyse what can be done to better the quality of service provided (to East Malaysians).” – The Vibes, December 8, 2022
