MIRI – A whale measuring at least 4m in length was saved when it was pushed out and set free after beaching on the Kuala Baram coast facing the South China Sea today.

The incident occurred at about noon near Kg Nelayan Batu 4 in Kuala Baram, about 20km north of Miri city, said the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).

“At about 12 pm, our Bomba station received a call from members of the public about a whale stranded on the beach at the kampung.

“Our teams deployed to the site found a whale stranded on the beach and could not swim away.

“The whale was in shallow waters, and it was at least 4m long. Our firemen and some local villagers managed to push the whale into deeper waters.

“It managed to free itself and swam away,” the department said in a press statement.

The firemen did not reveal the species of the stranded whale. – The Vibes, January 24, 2023
