GEORGE TOWN – Malaysia’s street food capital wants hawkers to join the Menu Rahmah programme to help consumers with the rising cost of living.

State Domestic Trade, Industry and Entrepreneur Development committee chairperson Datuk Abdul Halim Hussein said while traders in some 100 upcoming Ramadan bazaars have agreed to participate, more encouragement is needed for traders of Chinese and Indian cuisines to join the programme.

The Menu Rahmah programme features a complete meal for a budget price of not more than RM5.

Abdul Halim said initial feedback from participating Ramadan bazaar traders here has been positive, as they believe the programme will also help push sales of their other items.

Traders should also explain the Menu Rahmah concept to customers so that there is no misunderstanding of any “stigma” surrounding the programme launched by the federal government recently with the help of the private sector.

“It is simply an alternative to help those burdened by rising living costs. Consumers in turn should also be wise in dissuading traders from profiteering. We just want to sincerely help those burdened,” Abdul Halim told reporters here.

While launched by the federal Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry, it does not entail government funds and relies on participating food and beverage operators and retailers to craft suitable menus. – The Vibes, February 18, 2023
