SHAH ALAM – Malaysia almost lost its democratic system of government when Perikatan Nasional (PN) was in power, said PKR vice-president Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

In his winding-up speech at the party’s special congress in Malawati Stadium today, Amirudin equated PN’s “hateful” political leadership to those of fascists.

He added that Malaysia almost lost its democratic system when the coalition held the reins of power, as debates and arguments, including during parliamentary sessions, were often silenced.

“This is not new. We can see that during the Spanish flu era, there was a fascist wave that led to the prevalence of Nazis before the Second World War,” he said.

“The elements were brought (to current times). Now, the ‘green wave’ brought the ways of fascism, which is not suitable for Malaysian politics,” he added.

The Selangor menteri besar equated the opposition coalition’s political style to that of former US president Donald Trump.

Amirudin also called out the opposition’s tendency to rely on fearmongering tactics to influence the people, which he said will instead divide them.

The Gombak MP instead urged fellow party members to counter the politics of hatred and bring back love to the nation through the human spirit.

He added that they should forget each other’s differences, find a common ground, and focus on unifying the people under the Madani concept.

With the party’s track record, Amirudin hoped that PKR could defend state legislatures currently controlled by Pakatan Harapan with a bigger majority and win Kedah over, while giving its rivals a run for their money in Kelantan and Terengganu. – The Vibes, March 18, 2023
