KULAI – The act of uploading and spreading obscene content is an offence under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Therefore, Deputy Communications and Digital Minister Teo Nie Ching advised all parties to be more careful when uploading or sharing any content on social media.
“If we refer to Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act, it is stated that the improper use of network facilities or network services is indeed an offence, for example, obscene, menacing or offensive content and so on.
“If someone uploads (such) content (through) social media, (they) can be investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act,” she told reporters after attending the breaking of fast event at Felda Bukit Batu community hall here today.
She was asked about the spread of a video of a young couple allegedly engaging in an indecent act in a car.
Teo, who is also Kulai MP, said that the ministry, through the Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), will cooperate with the Royal Malaysia Police to identify the individuals who uploaded the inappropriate content.
“We have asked the MCMC to investigate people who have misused the internet to upload and spread the content,” she said.
Under the act, those convicted can face a maximum fine of RM50,000, or imprisonment of up to a year, or both. – Bernama, April 9, 2023
