KUALA LUMPUR – DAP veteran Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang has advised Muda not to be “overhasty” and to cooperate with unity government parties in the six state elections instead of contesting solo.

Lim said Muda must support the unity government’s efforts to build Malaysia and prevent it from returning to the practices of past leaders that caused the country to be divided and corrupt.

“Muda should not be overhasty and should cooperate with the unity government in the six state polls in August.

“Muda leadership should reconsider its decision to go solo in the six state polls,” Lim said in a statement today.

The DAP stalwart was responding to Muda’s announcement yesterday that it would contest in the state polls on its own.

Party president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman later explained that this was driven by the fact that Pakatan Harapan (PH) had ignored its requests for a discussion on joining the coalition.

Syed Saddiq also said Muda, while it supported PH’s values and reformist agenda, was concerned about having to compromise its (Muda’s) principles “in exchange for seats and positions”.

The youth-based party aims to be “the voice of conscience for the people” playing a check-and-balance role, he added.

Founded in 2020 after its president Syed Saddiq was sacked from Bersatu following the Sheraton Move, the party currently has only one MP, Syed Saddiq himself who is representing Muar, and one assemblyman, Muda deputy president Amira Aisya Abd Aziz in Puteri Wangsa.

The party was a PH ally in the Johor state election in 2022, and in the 15th general election last November.

Lim, meanwhile, said the results of the six state polls will indicate whether Malaysia slides into decline under the religious and racial rhetoric of opposition parties. – The Vibes, June 27, 2023
