MIRI – Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) will convene an urgent meeting tonight to discuss the move by coalition member, Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), to link up with Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB).

The meeting will be held in Kuching and attended by leaders of GPS component parties – which include Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu, the Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), and PDP.

SUPP president Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian told TV Sarawak that GPS, as a coalition, will discuss the latest move by PDP and PSB to declare their partnership via a memorandum of understanding in Kuala Lumpur.

However, Sim said the move by PDP and PSB was expected.

“GPS as a component will discuss the link up between PDP and PSB and the way forward will become clearer after the meeting.

“The move by PDP and PSB to form a collaboration is already expected as PSB had been trying to link up with GPS for quite some time already. PSB had wanted to also work with SUPP and PRS,” said Sim.

While GPS looks jubilant with the latest political hook-up between PDP and PSB, a Pakatan Harapan (PH) senator said PSB’s move is aimed at killing off the opposition in Sarawak.

The move by PSB to link up with PDP is akin to PSB trying to wipe out the opposition in Sarawak since PDP is a component of the state ruling government, said Senator Abun Sui yesterday.

Sui, who is Sarawak PKR deputy chief and Sarawak PH information chief, said PSB is no longer considered an opposition party in Sarawak.

“PSB president Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh (Bawang Assan assemblyman) is the current opposition leader in the Sarawak assembly.

“His move to get PSB to form a partnership with PDP at the state and national levels means PSB is no longer an opposition party in Sarawak.

“Wong should officially resign as opposition leader for Sarawak since PSB is no longer in the opposition in the state,” he said.

The only opposition assembly representatives now are from Sarawak DAP – Chong Chien Jen (Padungan) and Violet Yong (Pending).

Wong and other PSB leaders had two days earlier met with PDP president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing in Kuala Lumpur and inked a deal to form a partnership at the state and national levels.

GPS has 76 seats in the 82-seat assembly, PSB three, DAP two, and an independent holds the Batu Lintang seat. – The Vibes, July 15, 2023
