PUTRAJAYA – Malaysia supports the call by the Arab Group and the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for the resumption of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA)’s 10th Emergency Special Session, scheduled to convene tomorrow at the world body’s headquarters in New York.
Brunei, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Maldives, Timor Leste and Vietnam also joined Malaysia in supporting the request following a veto cast by the United States on a draft resolution at the Security Council addressing the grave situation in occupied Palestine, including East Jerusalem.
“Malaysia is committed to participating in the UN Security Council High-Level Open Debate on the Situation in the Middle East on October 24 and the 10th Emergency Special Session of the General Assembly on October 26,” said Foreign Ministry in a statement today.
Malaysia strongly urges immediate cessation of all acts of violence including acts of terror, provocation, incitement and destruction by the occupying power and wishes to remind all states that one cannot advocate for human rights, while at the same time ignoring the atrocities towards the Palestinians.
Malaysia stands firm by its principled position that the Palestinians deserve their own independent and sovereign state, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Malaysia stands ready to work with all parties towards a peaceful and amicable solution to the crisis, added the statement.
On Monday, UNGA president Dennis Francies announced that he would convene an emergency special meeting on October 26 in response to requests from Jordan and other countries regarding the ongoing Palestinian crisis.
An emergency special session can be called within 24 hours if requested by the Security Council or a majority of UN members.
Nearly 8,000 people have been killed in the conflict, including at least 6,546 Palestinians and 1,400 Israelis, Anadolu Agency reported today. – Bernama, October 25, 2023
