KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Football League (MFL) has warned Sarawak United FC to resolve salary arrears or risk losing their spot in this year’s Malaysia Cup.
In a statement today, MFL said Sarawak has 14 days starting today to resolve their players’ unpaid salaries and failure to do so would lead to their disqualification from the Malaysia Cup.
MFL has also decided to immediately channel RM100,000 from the club’s broadcast rights towards helping ease the financial burden of the affected players and staff for the time being.
However, this immediate RM100,000 monetary aid is a small fraction of the bigger amount and Sarawak will need to sort out the issue within the next two weeks.
This was decided at the fourth MFL board of directors’ meeting for the 2021-2025 term, chaired by its president Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan.
“Based on the report MFL received from the Professional Footballers Association (PFAM), the MFL board of directors agreed to take immediate action and use Sarawak United’s broadcast rights fund of RM100,000 and channel it for (the) salaries of players and staff.
“Payments to those affected will be channelled through PFAM,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, in a separate statement, PFAM said that it welcomes MFL’s efforts and will continue working together with the football body in any matters relating to players’ welfare and well-being.
Previously, PFAM tweeted that it had received reports from several Sarawak players regarding the ongoing issue.
