KUALA LUMPUR – Police have now confiscated over RM11 million from illegal gambling and betting syndicates since the start of the 2022 Qatar World Cup as the tournament reaches its closing stages.
Since the start of their Ops Soga IX on November 19, police have made 412 arrests from 348 raids conducted across the country, they said in a statement.
They had also seized RM10,601,201.25 in credit value from betting software, RM417,613 in cash, HK$382,995 (RM216,770), SG$500 (RM1,631), 20 computers, 11 laptops, two tablets, 496 handphones, 11 routers, 207 sim cards, 103 papers with suspected World Cup bets, and 23 match schedules.
According to police, the most arrests were made in Selangor with the total now up to 135 since the start of the operation.
They said those arrested will be investigated under the Betting Act 1953 and the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.
Police also said since November 19, 348 investigation papers have been opened and from that, 289 are still being looked into, while 52 cases have been charged, and 7 cases have been charged in court.
“Police will take stern action against those who organise and carry out gambling in accordance with the laws that are set in place to combat gambling.
“For those in the public that may have any information on gambling, they may share that information through the Ops Soga WhatsApp hotline at 016-577-3477,” police said.
Previously, police had confiscated over RM3 million in illegal gambling money up to November 28 as part of the operation.
