SECURITY AUTHORITIES in Russia have detained at least eleven suspects over involvement in a deadly terrorist attack at a concert hall in Moscow yesterday.

The head of the Federal Security Service (FSB), Aleksandr Bortnikov, was reported by Russian media as having briefed President Vladimir Putin of this latest development.

At least 60 people were killed and over 145 others injured in the incident at the Crocus City Hall.

Those arrested include “all four terrorists directly involved” in the attack inside the hall located on the outskirts of the city, Bortnikov informed the head of state.

The update by the FSB head to Putin was reported by state run news agency RIA-Novosti, citing a Kremlin source.

Several news agencies have reported that global terrorist network Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Meanwhile, Malaysia issued a strong condemnation on the mass assault, and expressed its condolences to the government and people of Russia, in particular the bereaved families of the victims.

In a statement issued by Wisma Putra, the government also wished speedy recovery to those injured.

“Malaysia reaffirms its stance in rejecting terrorism and violent extremism in all forms and manifestations.

“Malaysia continues to underscore the urgent need for a concerted international effort to eliminate the scourge of terrorism in a comprehensive and effective manner,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in the statement.

It added that the Malaysian embassy in Moscow has relayed that all registered Malaysians and Malaysian students in Moscow have been accounted for and are safe.

“Malaysians and Malaysian students in Moscow are advised to stay updated on the latest developments and follow the latest updates and guidance provided by the local authorities,” it said.

Terrorists equipped with military gear

According to RT International, a group of gunmen had stormed the large music venue located in Krasnogorsk, a settlement on the western outskirts of the Russian capital.

The hall is part of a larger entertainment complex opened in 2009, which also includes a shopping mall and hotel.

The concert hall holds up to 7,500 people and was almost packed when the terrorists launched their assault.

The popular rock band Picnic was set to perform when the attack occurred, the media agency reported.

“According to footage circulating online, some five gunmen took part in the shooting. They appeared to be carrying automatic firearms and had other military gear,” said an RT International update.

They reportedly killed the security guards – who were unarmed – at the main entrance to the venue, and blocked it before continuing their rampage inside.

“Once the terrorists reached the concert hall, they reportedly set chairs inside on fire,” it added.

“The blaze spread across the building and reached the roof before firefighters could start combating it.”
