PERIKATAN Nasional (PN) will field a candidate in the coming Mahkota by-election, the New Straits Times reported.

This was announced by PAS Deputy President Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man who said PN would meet soon to discuss the matter.

“PN will contest the Mahkota state seat in the September 28 by-election and the candidate is likely to be from Bersatu,” he said.

The Kubang Kerian MP said PN would form a committee for the Mahkota by-election as soon as possible while PAS would continue to mobilise its machinery to support PN.

He said PAS’s machinery would be drawn from the three southern states – Johor, Malacca, and Negri Sembilan – and would be assisted by additional teams from across the country.

The Election Commission (EC) yesterday fixed September 28 for the Mahkota by-election, which needed to be held to fill the vacancy left behind by the death of assemblyman Datuk Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain.

Nominations will be announced on September 14, while early voting is set for September 24.

The by-election will see 66,318 voters going to the polls, and the EC is allocating RM2.4 million for the process.

In the 15th Johor elections in 2022, Sharifah Azizah won the Mahkota seat with a majority of 5,166 votes in a four-cornered fight against Pakatan Harapan’s Taqiuddin Cheman, PN’s Mohamad Nor Lingan, and Warisan’s Mohamed Noor Suleiman.

Sharifah Azizah, who was receiving treatment at Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital in Kluang, passed away at the age of 63 on August 2. – August 14, 2024.
