THE number of students from mainland China coming to study in universities in Malaysia has surged beyond the 40,000 mark.
The head of China Consulate-General Sarawak office, Xing Wei Ping, said the milestone was reached recently.
“This figure shows that Malaysia is not just a key partner to China in trade, but also in education.
“The more than 40,000 students from China studying in Malaysia now can learn a lot from the education offered in Malaysia.
“As far as trade volume is concerned, China is the largest trading partner to Malaysia.
“Bilateral trade volume is expected to exceed beyond US$200 billion this year,” he said when speaking at a Friendship City agreement ceremony between Miri and Zhao Ping city yesterday evening.
Xing, whose office is based in Kuching, said some 1.5 million China tourists had visited Malaysia so far this year.
“Sarawak is also becoming a state with plenty of potential for business and industrial relations with China.
“The signing of the friendship cities agreements will enhance cultural and social exchanges and future tourism ties,” he said.
State Deputy Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Michael Tiang represented Sarawak during the ceremony at Miri City Hall.
He said Sarawak welcomes more Chinese tourists and industries to come to the state.
He expressed hopes that key China business players will help fuel bilateral ties between China and Sarawak in new economic spheres.
Pointing out that Sarawak is going big in new fields like the hydrogen economy, he said the state aims to be the leading green energy producer in the country soon. – August 28, 2024.
