When constructing the proposed Miri to Mulu highway, blasting activities and cutting hillslopes near Mulu National Park must be totally prohibited.

Social and environmental activist Willie Kajan who hails from Mulu,  said the ecosystems in and near Mulu are extremely delicate as they have been mostly unaffected by major human developments since prehistoric times.

"We in Mulu view the proposed Miri to Mulu road link with extreme caution.

"Yes the road link will be of benefit but the route and the method of construction to be used must be considered very carefully.

"No blasting or cutting of hills can be allowed. And there must be a big buffer zone so that the highway ends far away from the national park and not too near," he said.

On Nov 21, it was reported that a highway linking Miri city to world heritage site Mulu National Park stretching about 200 kms will be constructed to facilitate easier travelling for tourists visiting the biggest cave systems in the world.

The State Legislative Assembly has endorsed the proposal for this important project and the highway is estimated to cost RM3.6 billion. - November 24, 2024
