A SALESMAN was sentenced to 10 years in prison and two strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court today after pleading guilty to slashing a motorcyclist in an incident on the Federal Highway motorcycle lane last month.

Judge ‘Ainul Bashiirah Dona Don Biyajid handed down the sentence after the accused, Azmi Jantan, 43, pleaded guilty to the charge.

The court ordered the accused to serve the sentence starting from the date he was arrested, June 11.

The man was charged with intentionally causing serious injury to a 45-year-old man by slashing him with a meat cleaver, a weapon capable of causing death.

He was charged with committing the offence at Kilometre 14.6 of the Federal Highway motorcycle lane, Section 13, at about 8.19 am, June 11.

Thus, he committed an offence punishable under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which provides for imprisonment of up to 20 years and shall also be fined or caned.

According to the facts of the case, the victim, who is also an executive of a company, suffered fractures to his shoulder, hand, finger and left wrist, as well as wounds to his head and face.

Deputy Public Prosecutor, Amir Saifullah Mohammad Sallehuddin, requested that the accused be given a severe sentence as a lesson, and the victim suffered critical injuries to vital organs due to the accused's attack.

"The weapon used by the accused was a meat cleaver that could be fatal. Fortunately, the victim in this case did not die.

"Taking into account the public interest factor, which is that this case arose from a trivial matter, namely honking the horn on the highway, and the accused's actions could create fear among other road users," he said.

Azmi, who was not represented, then requested the court to reduce the sentence and also stated that he had no dependents and did not know the victim. – July 8, 2026
