THE decision by Umno to join forces with PAS to hold a solidarity rally for former premier Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak can threaten the national unity government.

DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng told a press conference that it also challenges the position of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the prime minister of the unity government.

He said Umno must realise that any programme with PAS which is part of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition will undermine political stability.

"It will also affect the confidence of the people over the sincerity of Umno to be part of the national unity government which was formed based on the advice dispensed by the Yang di - Pertuan Agong in 2022."

It was reported that Umno and PAS will hold a solidarity rally next Monday (January 6) when the Appeal Court hears Najib's application to serve his sentencing through house arrest based on a supposedly Royal decree.

This is the first time that both parties are working together since 2022 when the so-called Muafakat Nasional partnership was disbanded when Umno joined the Anwar-led national unity government, Lim contended.

The proposed rally comes on the heels of personal attacks launched by Umno Youth head Dr Muhammad Akmal Saleh towards Anwar, said Lim.

"It is also unfair for Akmal to question Anwar over his status as a prime minister. Anwar was officially pardoned by the King in 2018," said Lim.

As a member of the unity coalition, Umno should not be resorting to such a campaign, he said.

"It can erode the commitment towards unity in the name of political stability," said Lim.

"Umno must be aware that any joint event with PAS, an opposition party, will also raise doubts about Umno’s political stability and its position in the unity government."

Also present was DAP's iconic leader Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang. - December 31, 2024.
