A MEMBER of Parliament suggested that the Minister's portfolio in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) be divided into two, specifically for Islam and non-Islam.

Raub MP, Chow Yu Hui, said that the measure is important to strengthen unity among the multi-ethnic population in the country and to ensure that no group is marginalised, reported Sinar Harian.

He said that a special Exco to take care of non-Muslim citizens has also been established in several states, including Negeri Sembilan, Penang, and Perak.

"I propose that the Minister's portfolio in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) be divided into two, specifically one for Islamic affairs and another for non-Islamic affairs."

"This minister (non-Islamic affairs) can be appointed from among the respected leaders among non-Muslims," he said while debating the Royal Address in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Previously, the proposal to create guidelines for Muslims attending non-Muslim festivals sparked controversy following various reactions received, including from leaders in the country.

Following that, Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the Cabinet has decided that the guidelines proposed by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) were unnecessary.

Yu said that the proposal would also indirectly allow for a fairer management of religion in the country.

"Both ministers can also communicate on various religious issues to avoid false controversies.

"Additionally, it will also help shape a more inclusive, diverse, and harmonious Malaysia," he said. – February 12, 2025
