THE long-awaited widening of the KL-Karak Highway (KLK) is set to begin at the end of this month, with an anticipated completion date in 2029.
This project, spanning 45.3 kilometers, aims to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance safety features along the busy route connecting Gombak and Bentong, Pahang.
State Infrastructure and Agriculture Exco, Datuk Izham Hashim, confirmed that the expansion involves adding one lane in each direction, starting from the Gombak Toll Plaza.
He noted that the project has received approval from the federal government, and preliminary works commenced last month.
Izham explained that the project would be carried out within the existing highway corridor, eliminating the need for any additional land acquisitions.
He highlighted that the highway reserve in Selangor is partially owned by the Federal Land Commissioner (PTP) and the Selangor State Forestry Department (JPNS).
In addition, he shared that the KLK concession company, AFA Prime Berhad, in collaboration with relevant government agencies, has identified squatter settlements near the highway's edge.
To address the issue, a detailed census of affected settlements is being conducted, which will help determine the next steps in line with existing regulations.
Izham also mentioned that the project would greatly benefit highway users by addressing longstanding traffic congestion issues, particularly during peak travel periods such as the festive seasons.
Selangor Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari, who had previously expressed the need for this expansion, emphasised the importance of this initiative in improving travel comfort for both residents and commuters.
Once completed, the KL-Karak Highway widening project is expected to significantly reduce travel time and provide smoother and safer road conditions for users in the region. – February 20, 2025
