A MAN had to abandon a newly stolen Toyota Vios after realising there was a six-year-old girl inside the vehicle in an incident near a kindergarten in Setia Alam, Shah Alam yesterday.
Shah Alam police chief Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim, said police received a call from the public around 7 am informing them that a woman had lost her car with her daughter still inside the vehicle.
He said that in the incident at 6:55 am, the 34-year-old mother dropped off her second child at a kindergarten and left her eldest child sleeping in the car with the engine still running and the doors unlocked.
"After dropping off her second child, the woman realised her car was missing, believed to be stolen along with her child who was still inside the vehicle.
“Efforts to locate the car and the child were carried out with the help of the public. At 7:45 am, the victim's child was found with the stolen car near an apartment about two kilometres from the location," he said in a statement.
He said investigations found that the suspect was a local man and was believed to have intended to steal the car without realising that the child was inside the vehicle.
"The suspect is believed to have been startled by the child's cries and immediately stopped the car before fleeing," he said.
Mohd Iqbal said that the suspect, however, took the victim's handbag which contained bank cards, identification documents, and two mobile phones worth about RM2,000.
The child was found with no injuries and investigations are ongoing under Section 379A of the Penal Code. – March 13, 2025
