UMNO secretary-general Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party has yet to officially receive a resignation letter from Senator Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.

“Umno views his intention to resign seriously because he wants to join PKR.

“It is inappropriate for any party in the Unity Government to accept membership from members of other parties arbitrarily.

“This is to avoid disharmony among the parties in the Unity Government coalition, which will lead to continued prejudice and misconceptions regarding the level of solidarity, sincerity and honesty among grassroots members.

Tengku Zafrul, the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister made the announcement he is leaving Umno and will join PKR earlier today.

He said he is vacating his seat on the Umno supreme council as well as his position as its Kota Raja division chief.

“I have submitted my resignation letter to the top leadership of Umno,” he said in a Facebook post.

He said the decision was not easy and came after extensive reflection and consultation with colleagues inside and outside the party, including Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

He also disclosed that he had informed the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leadership of his intention to join the party. – May 30, 2025
