TODAY, Malaysia celebrates the birthday of a man who has been called many things — reformer, survivor, leader. To me, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is all those things and more. He is, quite simply, my friend.
I have known Anwar long enough, close to 45 years as a child, to see the seasons of his life — the spring of his rise, the long winters of political exile, the false dawns, and finally, the real sunrise when he took his place as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia.”
In all that time, one truth has never changed: his belief that this nation can be better, fairer, and more united than it has ever been.
It is easy to admire Anwar Ibrahim the politician — the man who could electrify a crowd, outthink his opponents, and stand unbowed against decades of political persecution. And it was real, constant, painful persecution. But it is Anwar Ibrahim the man that has always inspired me more. The man who could still laugh in the darkest of moments.
The man who never lost his compassion, even for those who wronged him. The man who believed — truly believed — that Malaysia belongs to all its people, regardless of race, religion, or background. A fighter who never gave up on Malaysia, though at times it seemed Malaysia gave up on him.
I remember the times when standing with him was not fashionable, when doing so carried more risk than reward. Standing with him was not always popular, but it was right. Those were the moments that revealed the depth of his courage.
And they revealed something else — that friendship, like leadership, is tested not when things are easy, but when the world is against you.
Today, he carries the hopes of a nation on his shoulders. It is not an easy burden. Every day, he faces the impossible task of reconciling old wounds with new dreams, of holding together a country too often pulled apart by fear and division. And yet, he does it with a steadiness that comes only from a lifetime of struggle — and from an unshakeable love for his people.
On this day, I wish my friend many more years of health, wisdom, and the stubborn courage he has always shown. Malaysia needs that courage. We need his ability to look past the noise and see the promise in our future.
Anwar Ibrahim’s life is proof that resilience is not just about surviving the storms — it’s about walking out of them with your heart still open, your integrity intact, and your vision unclouded. That is why, as we celebrate his birthday, we also celebrate the hope he represents.
