MALAYSIA has voted in favour of a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution endorsing the New York Declaration, in a move signalling its continued solidarity with the Palestinian people and commitment to realising a two-state solution.
The resolution was overwhelmingly adopted with the support of 142 member states, while 10 voted against and 12 abstained.
In its national statement following the vote, Malaysia reaffirmed that any two-state solution must be achieved “without any preconditions”, based on pre-1967 borders and with East Jerusalem as the capital of an independent Palestinian state.
“Malaysia remains firm that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Palestine, along with the right of return for millions of refugees as guaranteed under international law, must be part of any solution,” the statement from Wisma Putra read early this morning.
Malaysia also called for the shortcomings of the New York Declaration to be addressed through a concrete action plan that safeguards Palestine’s right to statehood, reflects the aspirations of its people, and ensures that Israel is held accountable for breaches of international law, including war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The declaration, Malaysia stressed, must serve as an immediate pathway to ending the war in Gaza and halting the atrocities committed by the Israeli regime, ultimately bringing an end to the humanitarian catastrophe in the occupied Palestinian territories and paving the way for lasting peace in the Middle East.
Formally titled “Support for the New York Declaration on a Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution,” the resolution was introduced by France and Saudi Arabia, and co-signed by 17 UN member states during an international conference at UN headquarters in July.
The text outlines a multi-pronged roadmap for peace, including an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of hostages, the disarmament of Hamas and its removal from governing Gaza, the normalisation of relations between Israel and Arab states, and coordinated international efforts to end the conflict. - September 13, 2025
