A MAN accused of attempting to murder four police officers by allegedly trying to run them over during a dramatic car chase in Behrang last week pleaded not guilty at the Teluk Intan Sessions Court on Friday.
Mohd Ameerul Asraf Mohd Saipul, 35, entered his plea before Judge Norhamizah Shaiffuddin after the charge was read out. The visibly distressed accused wept in the dock before proceedings began and had to be comforted by his wife, who is five months pregnant with their sixth child.
The father of five stands accused of attempting to cause grievous harm to four officers — Mohd Azizul Yahya, Muhammad Lokman Nulhakim Mahdhir, S. Muniya Kaunden and Noor Azam Man — by allegedly using his vehicle as a weapon.
The alleged offence took place near a petrol station at the southbound Behrang rest and service area (R&R) in the Muallim district at approximately 11am on 20 September 2025.
He has been charged under Section 307(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment upon conviction.
Defence counsel Nur Shaqira Ibrahim appealed for a minimal bail, citing her client’s role as the sole breadwinner for his young family. She noted that he is self-employed, has no stable income, and supports five children aged between two and nine, with a sixth on the way.
The court granted bail at RM10,000 with one surety and ordered the accused to report to the nearest police station once a month. The case has been fixed for mention on 31 October to allow for the submission of documents.
The incident followed a high-speed police pursuit after the accused was suspected of involvement in a house burglary in Manjung.
According to earlier reports, officers from the Tapah District Police Headquarters’ Criminal Investigation Department spotted a suspicious Perodua Aruz SUV along Jalan Pahang in Tapah. The driver allegedly refused to stop and fled via the Tapah Toll Plaza, heading south towards Kuala Lumpur.
Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin stated that the suspect led officers on a chase spanning more than 60 kilometres before reaching the Behrang lay-by. Police were forced to open fire on the vehicle’s tyres before successfully apprehending the suspect. - September 26, 2025
