THE Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), carrying humanitarian aid and international volunteers, including 34 Malaysians, has officially entered the “yellow zone” — a maritime cautionary area 300 nautical miles from the shores of Gaza — and is expected to enter the high-risk “red zone” on Thursday.
Ahmad Musa Al-Nuwayri Kamaruzaman, founder of Cinta Salam Malaysia (CSM) and one of the Malaysian participants, confirmed the flotilla’s current position in a social media post early Tuesday.
“Finished a two-hour night watch today. We spotted a few drones, but they were distant. So we remain calm. Just a little more to go before we reach G. Wait for us, my brothers,” he wrote.
Ahmad Musa also appealed for continued prayers from the Malaysian public to ensure the safety of the convoy as it nears Gaza’s heavily militarised waters.
Another Malaysian volunteer aboard, Muhammad Abdullah — widely known as Ustaz Mad Kechik — issued a similar plea.
“Pray for our safe arrival in Gaza. We have just passed the yellow zone, and God willing, we will enter the red zone and then reach Gaza’s shores with the permission of Allah SWT.
“There is no strength or power except that of Allah, the Almighty. We continue to pray and seek His protection. Please pray for us all,” he said.
The red zone refers to a high-risk maritime area under strict Israeli surveillance and naval control, where flotillas attempting to reach Gaza have historically faced interception, intimidation or blockade.
The GSF mission, which includes aid such as food and medical supplies, is an international civil society effort aimed at breaking the Israeli naval blockade on Gaza. The participants hail from various countries, united in their commitment to deliver aid directly to Palestinians.
Previous flotillas have encountered interference during similar missions, with several vessels being approached by Israeli warships or surveillance aircraft.
Among those on board this year’s GSF are Malaysian women volunteers, whose courage has drawn admiration at home. Often overlooked by mainstream media or public spotlight, they have now emerged as quiet symbols of humanitarian resolve.
“While many of us chase social media approval or comfort, these women have chosen a path fraught with danger in defence of humanity,” wrote Merak Jalanan in a widely shared commentary.
“They are not tourists or thrill-seekers, but mothers, daughters and professionals who have traded their homes for a place on the high seas, where any moment could bring confrontation.
“In doing so, they have become guardians of dignity on the global stage — an honour far greater than empty speeches or applause.”
As the convoy edges closer to Gaza’s contested waters, the Malaysian public is being urged to stand in solidarity from afar and offer prayers for the safety and success of the mission.
Should the GSF succeed in reaching Gaza, it will mark a powerful statement of global resistance against siege and a testament to Malaysia’s active role in international humanitarian advocacy. - September 30, 2025
