Health Ministry probes viral claim of woman’s death linked to illegal supplement
The product contained the active ingredient Glutathione, which is listed under the “Negative List” in the Drug Registration Guidance Document (DRGD) — meaning it is not permitted in food products
THE Ministry of Health (MOH) is investigating claims circulating on social media that a woman allegedly died after consuming a health supplement sold online.
The inquiry is being led by the ministry’s Food Safety and Quality Division (FSQD).
In an official statement, the FSQD said preliminary checks revealed that the product contained the active ingredient Glutathione, which is listed under the “Negative List” in the Drug Registration Guidance Document (DRGD) — meaning it is not permitted in food products.
“Further inspection also found that the product is being marketed through e-commerce platforms and social media. Therefore, it does not comply with Section 13B(2)(d) of the Food Act 1983, which prohibits the addition of any substance not approved under the Act or its regulations,” the division said.
The FSQD confirmed that investigations are underway to verify the truth of the allegations and to identify details of the product, including labelling compliance, ingredients used, as well as the premises involved in its manufacture, import and distribution within the local market.
The probe follows a viral post on Threads claiming that a woman died after consuming a RM20 skin-whitening supplement sold via social media.
The division added that efforts are ongoing to trace the primary source of the claim to verify its authenticity.
“Based on preliminary searches, there have been no posts from family members or close acquaintances confirming the alleged death of a woman after consuming the product in question.
