THE atmosphere in the compound of the Rembau Hospital was filled with gloom as family members of the child who was found dead in a car yesterday evening waited for the autopsy process.
The parents of the two-year-old child were often seen struggling to control their emotions and crying.
Family members and acquaintances hugged each other and gave words of encouragement to calm the couple, who were shaken by the incident.
The victim's family members were seen arriving at the hospital at about 11.45 am, but it is understood that the autopsy was carried out at 2 pm.
The post-mortem process was still underway, and family members were waiting to claim the child's body for burial.
Seremban District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Azahar Abdul Rahim, confirmed that the post-mortem began at 2 pm at the hospital's Forensic Medicine Unit.
He said police had not yet decided on the number of witnesses who would be called to give evidence in the case and that they were still conducting investigations, including waiting for the result of the cause of death.
"Currently, the investigation into this case is leading to the existence of parental neglect and the case is being investigated under Section 31(1)(a) of the Children's Act 2001," he said.
It was earlier reported that the mother of the child involved, who is 35 years old and works at a bank in Seremban, only realised that her child had been left in the car when she wanted to return home at 5 pm.
The victim is believed to have been alone since 8 am when her mother forgot to drop him off at the babysitter's house.
Police also asked the public not to make any speculation that could interfere with the investigation.
