A COUPLE accused of engaging in indecent behaviour at the Batu Gantung Chinese cemetery in Ayer Itam has been remanded for three days until Thursday to assist police investigations.
The remand order was issued by Magistrate Nadratun Naim Mohd Saidi at Magistrates’ Court 3 on Tuesday morning. The court allowed the remand to run from Tuesday until March 26.
Earlier, police arrested the pair following the circulation of a video on social media showing the alleged act at the cemetery.
Northeast district police chief Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the female suspect, aged 37, was detained at about 8.35pm at a flat near Jalan Padang Tembak, while the male suspect, aged 58, was arrested at about 11.10pm in front of a building near Jalan Paya Terubong in Sungai Ara on Monday.
He said both individuals were local residents and admitted to being involved in the incident, which prompted police action after the video went viral.
Investigations are being conducted under Section 294(a) of the Penal Code, Section 509 of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
The 38-second clip showed a man appearing unclothed with his back facing the camera, while a woman was partially dressed and seated on a tombstone. The footage also captured a voice admonishing the couple, claiming that such behaviour had reportedly occurred at the location before.
In the same recording, the man is seen calmly putting on his trousers as the person filming continues to stress that cemetery grounds should be respected as a place of remembrance for the deceased.
The man later apologised for his actions, but the apology was not accepted, as the woman in the video warned that a police report would be lodged. - March 24, 2026
