THE Malaysian Anti‑Corruption Commission (MACC) is intensifying efforts to secure evidence from the United Kingdom as part of a formal investigation into whether international law firm White & Case played a role in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.

The probe centres on allegations that the firm was involved in preparing documents containing false or misleading information and issuing payment instructions that allegedly facilitated the transfer of funds related to 1MDB to unauthorised parties.

MACC chief Tan Sri Azam Baki said investigators have identified elements of potential offences under Malaysian law, including provisions of the Malaysian Anti‑Corruption Commission Act 2009 and the Anti‑Money Laundering, Anti‑Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

After completing the domestic phase of the investigation, Azam said the case now hinges on obtaining documentary evidence and key witness testimony from abroad before any final enforcement decisions can be made.

“The investigation has uncovered elements of wrongdoing, but further evidence from overseas is required to strengthen the case,” he said as reported by The New Straits Times.

The agency is seeking evidence through official channels, including the Attorney‑General’s Chambers and Mutual Legal Assistance requests.

The next phase of the inquiry is expected to focus on cooperation with authorities in the United Kingdom, where White & Case maintains offices and where related financial trails are believed to exist.

Investigators are also examining payments made to the firm, which are thought to be directly connected to the alleged misappropriation of 1MDB assets and the firm’s role in facilitating joint‑venture arrangements.

The investigation aligns with earlier reports that Malaysian authorities are probing whether White & Case played a part in transactions related to the controversial joint venture between 1MDB and PetroSaudi.

A United Kingdom‑based news portal reported on the transfer of US$700 million tied to the joint venture that was allegedly channelled to entities outside 1MDB’s control, raising questions about due diligence and the role of professional advisers.

MACC’s cross‑border efforts underscore the challenges of tracing and securing evidence in complex, multinational financial misconduct investigations. - April 8, 2026
