MALAYSIA is expected to sign a long-term cooperation agreement with Russia for a period of at least 20 years.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the agreement is to ensure that the country's oil, gas and diesel supply is guaranteed throughout the period.

“During a recent visit to Russia, President Putin (Vladimir Putin) has given a guarantee for a long-term agreement so that the supply of oil, gas and diesel to Malaysia is safe.

“If possible, for this period (at least 20 years) because of our friendship (with Russia),” he said when speaking at the Groundbreaking Ceremony of the Fontaines Industrial Park in Bertam, today.

Anwar said the diplomatic efforts carried out by the government are not aimed at the personal interests of any party, but to ensure that the country's development continues to be strengthened and the welfare of the people maintained.

“People are busy talking about why I did not go to Johor and Negeri Sembilan when there are PRN (State Elections) there.

“But, the priority I need to think about now is the matter of our future energy needs.

“In this regard, we are relieved because the meeting with President Putin brought good news to Malaysia,” he said.
