GEORGE TOWN – Penang is banking on the proposed redevelopment of the George Town and Butterworth waterfronts to rejuvenate the state’s historic trading and commercial enclaves.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the redevelopment – to be done over 20 years – will have a potential value of US$4 billion (RM16.5 billion).
“We welcome investors keen to reap the benefits of the revival of both areas under the Penang Bay development, especially in the digital sector,” he said, after announcing the winners of the Penang Bay concepts and ideas competition.
Of the 79 international entries, the top prize went to Selangor-based Qhawarizmi Architect firm.
Qhawarizmi Norhisha and Yasmin Rahman won US$20,000, while MPlan City Planning of University College London (UCL) took home the second prize.
UCL’s team comprised Wong Hui Ting, Helen Claire Carter, Kulkiran Bedi, Sikkharini Cintantyadwisthi and Zixuan Xiong
The third prize went to Malaysia’s Arkitek Kashaf and Mara University of Technology, Puncak Alam. The team comprised Aiman Al Fahmi Abdul Kashaf, Aieyeesha Aidi, Na’asah Nasrudin and Aareena Aidi.
Their winning entries will form the background and fundamentals in guiding the state to develop the Penang Bay with conservation, preservation and environmental protection in mind. – The Vibes, March 10, 2021
