MIRI – The Sibu Central Market has been ordered to shut today, after hundreds of traders were exposed to Covid-19.
Sibu Municipal Council chairman Clarence Ting said the order to seal off the market and cease all trading activities has been issued after more traders tested positive for the virus.
“The shut-down directive will be enforced from today until April 23, at least.”
He added that Sibu will also see stricter movement restrictions as the district logged 100 fresh Covid-19 infections yesterday.
“The standard operating procedures require that we close all non-essential shopping premises, like bars, karaokes and entertainment outlets.
“Eateries can operate, but only offer takeaway as dine-in is prohibited. Night markets are also banned with immediate effect.”
Ting said sanitisation will be carried out at the market and other premises in the district.
The Sibu Central Market and other commercial zones have been affected by several Covid-19 outbreaks since last year.
Sibu is the worst-hit district in Sarawak, as it makes up half of the 135 deaths and almost 22,000 infections related to Covid-19 in the state. – The Vibes, April 17, 2021
