MIRI – A China national working at a construction site in central Sarawak died of Covid-19.
He is one of four Covid-19 deaths reported by the state Disaster Management Committee secretariat in a statement today.
The secretariat said the man is a positive case from the Putai cluster, an outbreak at the Baleh Hydro Dam construction site in the Kapit division of central Sarawak.
“The man from China was 48 years old. He was brought in dead at Kapit Hospital and tests confirmed he died of Covid-19.
“He did not have any comorbidities,” the secretariat said, without disclosing if the victim was infected prior to coming to Sarawak or after he was here.
The Putai cluster has more than 300 workers testing positive so far.
The three other deaths reported today involved a man aged 55 and a woman aged 80 in Sibu Hospital and a 78-year-old man in Sarawak General Hospital in Kuching.
“With the four latest deaths, the death toll has reached 417,” the secretariat said.
There are 440 new infections statewide, with Serian district recording 78 cases.
Kuching saw 62 cases, Song 59, Sibu 41, Mukah 37, Bintulu 29, Sri Aman 18, Miri 16 and numerous other districts below 15 new cases each.
The secretariat said three outbreaks were reported in three new clusters.
The Jalan Sagang cluster in Bau district saw 29 people in a village infected during a gathering.
The KM85 cluster in Mukah saw 92 oil palm plantation workers infected while the Sg Manong cluster in Meradong involved 13 folks infected during a longhouse gathering.
The secretariat has appealed to the people to obey all standard operating procedures to curb the spread of infection and fatalities. – The Vibes, July 2, 2021
