MIRI – Heavy downpour which lasted over a day caused massive floods to affect many settlements in the remote parts of northern Sarawak this morning.

Baram People’s Action Committee chairman Philip Jau told The Vibes that the heavily populated settlements saw waters rise between 1m and 2m, causing residents to be evacuated by personnel from the Fire and Rescue Department.

Among the badly-hit districts include Telang Usan, Marudi and Mulu while, the sub-districts of Bakong and Tinjar also suffered from the floods.

“The settlements in Tinjar, Apoh, Tutoh and Mulu are completely flooded now.

“While the main rivers such as Sg Baram and Sg Tinjar are still rising.

“The rains had caused many of its tributaries to overflow from their banks,” he said.

Sharing some images of the flood-hit areas captured by drones, Jau said among the worst-hit settlements include Long Aton, Long San, Lio Mato, Long Bemang, Long Jeeh, Long Subeng, Long Bedian and villages located close to the Mulu National Park.
