KUALA LUMPUR – The visit by Singapore’s High Commissioner to Malaysia Vanu Gopala Menon to the residence of former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, yesterday has sparked rumours that the Pekan MP is set to be appointed to a significant role in the government helmed by Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

In his Facebook post, yesterday, Najib posted a picture of himself with Vanu Gopala following the visit.

“Hopefully, the relationship between Malaysia and Singapore will become stronger, especially through the economy.

“Policies and the relations between both countries that have so far benefited investors, pandemic control efforts and the Asean populace should also be further enhanced.

“Let’s work together,” he said in his status.

Despite facing multiple charges related to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), murmurings that Najib will be appointed as the economic adviser to the cabinet continues to gain traction.

Earlier, Najib had also met Ismail Sabri on Tuesday at the prime minister’s office to discuss economic challenges and strategies to address the Covid-19 pandemic.

Najib, too, posted on Facebook about the meeting.

“My stand and principles are clear. If there is an opportunity to improve, I will suggest them. If wrong, I will oppose and I will support good ideas.

“Make no mistake, I gave my honest feedback. Malaysia is still in crisis and faced with bigger challenges, economically and people’s welfare.

“From a macro point of view, we are far behind compared with our neighbours. Malaysia no longer attracts foreign investors after 2018.

“Our people are not confident in the national economy. There are concerns about need, income and job security.”

Najib was prime minister and finance minister until Barisan Nasional lost the 2018 general election.

Yesterday, Padang Rengas MP Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said it will be a wise move to appoint Najib to the post considering his past experience as prime minister himself from April 2009 to May 2018, a period the former said had seen the country reach new heights. – The Vibes, September 10, 2021
