TAMPIN – The army will form an inquiry team to improve security operations’ procedures and governance following an incident in Kuching, Sarawak, last night where a soldier allegedly fired shots before committing suicide.

Defence forces chief Gen Tan Sri Affendi Buang said this is to prevent such incidents from recurring.

The armed forces’ focus now is to render assistance to the soldier’s widow and child, he said.

“I convey my condolences to all those involved. The armed forces will hand over the case to police to investigate.

“We don’t want to issue preliminary statements regarding the incident so as to not hinder police’s probe,” he told a press conference in Gemas, Negri Sembilan, today.

He said the armed forces will hold a special presser on the case to ensure there is no misunderstanding or negative perception.

In the incident yesterday, the soldier, in his 20s, died after allegedly shooting himself in Kg Kolong 1, Sg Tengah Jalan Matang.

The army man, based at the Bau camp, is believed to have gone on a shooting rampage, in which his mother-in-law was injured. – Bernama, October 14, 2021
