GEORGE TOWN – Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain has called on minorities to consider a career with the Royal Malaysia Police as the force needs all the help it can muster to face future policing challenges – especially cybercrime.

Shuhaily said the force is facing difficulty in hiring non-Bumiputeras, so he hopes that Malaysians of Chinese and Indian descent would consider serving the public through the police.

“I am overjoyed to see some Chinese men and women as well as Indians joining our police undergraduate volunteer corps (Suksis). It is honorable to serve our nation.”

He said this after presenting commendations to 137 Suksis graduates of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) at the institution’s Dewan Budaya hall here.

Among those present were USM vice-chancellor Datuk Faisal Rafiq Mahamd Adikan, Bukit Aman Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (Support Resources Coordination) assistant director Azhan Abdul Halim, USM Suksis commandant Prof Datuk Abdul Rahman Mohamed, and Penang police crime prevention and community safety department head Mohd Nasri Omar.

There are now 3,999 Suksis members in 19 institutions of higher learning, who after undergoing three years of service and training, can apply to join the police force.

They would be given due consideration due to their stint in Suksis.

Shuhaily said that Chinese and Indian undergraduates should consider joining Suksis as it can mould their character into becoming persons of integrity and responsibility.

Faisal said that students who joined uniformed societies were found to have an edge as undergraduates because they are imbued with discipline to cope with life’s challenges.

On a different note, Suhaily, who will be celebrating his 24th year in the force tomorrow, hoped that the police will continue to grow in strength to counter new threats and better serve the community.

One of the youngest ever state police chiefs in the country, Suhaily rose through the ranks before he was elevated to head the Penang police force earlier this year – The Vibes, November 30, 2021.
