GEORGE TOWN – A factory in Jalan Kebun, Juru, has been accused of dumping chemicals into Sg Jawi for almost 10 years, as well as emitting thick smoke.
Acting on a public tip-off, The Vibes surveyed the plant’s location, with a source saying it sits on about 1ha of agricultural land.
The source added that factories are not allowed to be built on land with agriculture status.
Checks found that the factory, located less than 2km from a fishing jetty, is surrounded by a high fence.
A pile of recyclables, as well as food waste, could be seen there.
The Vibes was advised not to go near the area, as the factory is equipped with closed-circuit television cameras.
A Sg Belanak Unit Fishermen’s Association representative, who declined to be named, said the river pollution has affected fish stock, forcing fishermen to go to remote areas.
“The factory is located too close to the estuary, so it really affects our livelihood. We have to look for fish in other places if we have the capital to do so.”
He said he has not filed a complaint with the authorities as he is worried about his safety and that of his family.
A resident, who wanted to be known only as Maimunah, said: “I understand that not only this factory operates illegally, but there are several others nearby operating without a licence, too.
“We are also used to the view of the dirty river, and the smoke that the factories release.”
The Vibes is waiting for a response from the Seberang Prai City Council and Penang Environment Department on the matter.
