Detainee dies five days after attempting suicide in police lockup

KUALA LUMPUR – Police have reported yet another custodial death, this time involving a local man who died when undergoing treatment five days following his arrest.

Shah Alam police chief Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the deceased, aged 39, was apprehended on June 15 for alleged involvement with narcotics under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and was brought to the Shah Alam centralised lockup.

“The detainee had tried to hang himself while in the centralised lockup but was rescued and later sent to Shah Alam Hospital to receive treatment.”

He said the detainee who began receiving treatment the same day he was arrested was pronounced dead by medical officers on Monday at 5.40pm.

“The cause of death is yet to be established.”

Iqbal said in a statement that investigations into the incident are being carried out by the Criminal Investigations and Death in Custody Unit, along with Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standard Compliance Department.

The last case of death in custody was reported in May, involving a 48-year-old man in a temporary lockup at the Seri Alam police station in Johor.

In that case, the man died about an hour after he was discovered by lockup officers in a weak state in his cell. – The Vibes, June 22, 2022
