KANGAR – The Entrepreneur Development and Cooperative Ministry has channelled RM1,122,000 in aid to 24 cooperatives in Perlis that were affected by the Covid-19 pandemic through five programmes.

Its secretary-general Datuk Suriani Ahmad said the government is now focused on redeveloping all affected cooperatives through the launch of several aid packages.

“Almost RM21 million has been channelled to 542 cooperatives throughout Malaysia since 2021 till today,” she told reporters after attending the Perlis state-level 2022 National Cooperatives Day event at the grounds of Pasar Terapung at the Irrigation and Drainage Department here today.

Suriani said RM2,223,600 involving three cooperatives was approved for Perlis under the Malaysian Cooperatives Commission Working Capital Fund Financing facility for 2021.

“This shows that cooperatives in Perlis have the potential to continue to grow and will utilise the facilities prepared by the government for the state’s socio-economic development,” she said.

She hoped that the state government would involve cooperatives in Perlis in the Perlis Economic Development Plan so that more financial assistance in terms of grants and financing can be channelled directly to citizens in Perlis.

“The state government could encourage cooperatives to get involved in the agro-food and agriculture sector, especially chicken breeding, that will help reduce the price of chicken in the market, in line with efforts being implemented at the federal level,” she added. – Bernama, June 25, 2022
