KUALA LUMPUR – Former MIC deputy president Tan Sri S. Subramaniam passed away today in his sleep after a protracted illness. He was 78.
According to several news reports, the former party stalwart was pronounced dead at about 8pm this evening.
The veteran politician had been in a comatose state since contracting a brain aneurysm 11 years ago.
He is survived by his 70-year-old wife Puan Sri Tina Subramaniam, two sons, and a daughter.
The reports also noted that Subramaniam, also known as Subramaniam Sinniah, breathed his last while his family was at his bedside.
Subramaniam was one of the longest-serving senior members of MIC, holding the deputy presidency post from 1979 to 2006.
During his time as MIC deputy chief, he also gained a reputation for having conflicts with the party’s then president Tun Samy Vellu.
During his time in the party, he was also the two-term parliamentarian for Damansara between 1974 and 1982, and a four-term MP for Segamat.
The late Subramaniam also held several portfolios, including as deputy minister in the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry during the administrations under prime ministers Tun Hussein Onn, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.
According to The Star, Subramaniam's funeral will be held at the family home in Section 16, Petaling Jaya on Thursday (July 7). – The Vibes, July 5, 2022
