KUALA LUMPUR – Siti Nuramira Abdullah, who allegedly insulted Islam during an open mic comedy skit at the Crackhouse Comedy Club, may be released from police custody soon as donations roll in for her to make the RM20,000 bail.
Her lawyer, R. Sivaraj, told The Vibes that about RM15,000 has been collected from the public since the crowdfunding initiative set up on Friday.
“At this rate, I believe that we will have the RM20,000 needed for Siti Nuramira to post bail sometime tomorrow.”
He said the team intends to post bail for her first before continuing to raise funds for her partner, Alexander Navin Vijayachandran, who is also in need of RM20,000.
Sivaraj added that the funds will be transferred to the woman’s surety once the target amount has been reached.
Previously, The Vibes reported on Friday that legal group Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) will be aiding Siti Nuramira and her partner to raise the necessary funds.
Sivaraj said LFL’s bank account will be used for their crowdfunding purposes, adding that the purpose of bail is not to punish accused individuals but to ensure their attendance at subsequent court hearings.
Earlier on the same day, the lawyer told The Vibes that the couple will be appealing for financial aid to settle the bail amount after failing to cough up the required funds on Wednesday.
He said many people have expressed an interest in donating to the duo who, at that time, had managed to gather about RM3,000.
On Wednesday, Siti Nuramira, 26, had pleaded not guilty to charges of inciting religious disharmony during her performance at the comedy club here, with judge Siti Amirah Ghazali setting bail at RM20,000 with one surety and August 18 for mention.
In a video which went viral on social media, she claimed to be a Muslim and to have memorised 15 chapters (juzuk) of the Quran, before stripping off her headscarf and baju kurung to reveal a sleeveless top and miniskirt.
Alexander, 38, also maintained his innocence to two charges under Section 233(1)(a) of the CMA 1998 for uploading insensitive materials to online platforms and is facing a RM20,000 bail in total. – The Vibes, July 17, 2022
