KUALA LUMPUR – Muslim preacher Zamri Vinoth Kalimuthu has pleaded not guilty to two charges of hurting and threatening to murder a woman.
The charges were read to him at the Kangar magistrates’ court in front of magistrate Siti Norhasliza Md Ali.
For the first charge, Zamri was accused of voluntarily causing hurt to a 38-year-old woman at Jalan Melati Indah, Taman Melati Indah in Padang Besar at 5pm on July 14.
If found guilty, the preacher, who is also CEO of One Centre Malaysia Perlis, faces a maximum jail term of a year and a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.
As for the second charge, he is accused of threatening to murder the same woman.
If convicted, he could be jailed up to seven years or fined, or both.
He was represented by Syed Muhammad Anwar Syed Lokman.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohd Nordin Ismail applied for the court to set aside bail as Zamri has five police reports lodged against him since 2010.
However, the magistrate allowed for a RM6,000 bail with one surety.
