KUALA LUMPUR – The Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) has launched an online petition pleading with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah not to grant Datuk Seri Najib Razak a royal pardon.
In the petition, Bersih 2.0 stated that Najib had committed a crime against the Malaysian public in his official capacity as prime minister and must serve his sentence to the fullest extent.
“Even if Najib has no shame for what he has done, we the rakyat had to live with the indignity of being known for the world’s largest case of kleptocracy.
“With all our hearts we appeal to Your Majesty to consider our request to deny any appeal for a pardon by Najib, who has brought shame to this country.
“As a nation, we must not tolerate corruption or the corrupt, whoever that person may be. Let Najib serve his 12 years in jail and pay the RM210 million fine so as to serve as an example to any leaders who think they can corruptly abuse their position of authority.
“Your Majesty, help us to uplift our heads high once again, to make us proud again as Malaysians,” said the petition.
At the time of writing, the petition has been signed by 482 people.
The petition is addressed to the Comptroller of the Royal Household Datuk Seri Ahmad Fadil Shamsuddin and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
The Federal Court had yesterday evening upheld the lower court’s guilty verdict of Najib on all seven charges in his SRC International Bhd corruption case.
He will serve 12 years in prison effective immediately and must pay RM210 million in fines, becoming the first Malaysian former prime minister to spend time behind bars. – The Vibes, August 24, 2022
