MIRI – Seven teenage bikers have been arrested for allegedly causing the death of a 14-year-old girl on the Taman Tunku highway, near the airport here.

Those detained are local boys aged between 15 and 19.

Miri police chief Alexson Naga Chabu said in a statement yesterday that the arrests were made following a police report lodged by the victim’s family.

“Initial investigations showed that the group of seven were riding their motorcycles when one of them collided with another motorcycle on the road, causing the rider and pillion rider to fall.

“The rider suffered broken limbs and the pillion rider had serious injuries, and she later died in Miri Hospital.”

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) and 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

If found guilty under Section 41, a first-time offender will be fined RM50,000 to RM100,000 and/or handed a five to 10-year jail sentence.

Under Section 42, a first-time offender will be disqualified from holding a driving licence for the first offence for five years and given a maximum jail term of fewer than five years and a fine between RM5,000 and RM15,000. – The Vibes, August 27, 2022
