KUALA LUMPUR – Penang is the next state to strip former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak of his honorifics after Selangor.
In a statement issued on behalf of Penang Governor Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak, the state has revoked, effective today, the Darjah Utama Pangkuan Negeri award that was conferred to Najib in 2009.
It carries the title of Dato’ Seri Utama.
Acting state secretary Datuk Mohd Zakuan Zakaria said in the statement that the revocation comes after the Federal Court upheld his SRC International Sdn Bhd conviction on August 23.
Najib was guilty of all seven charges in the SRC International corruption case and was ordered to begin his 12-year prison sentence immediately.
On September 12, Selangor ruler Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah revoked the titles he conferred to former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor effective immediately.
State secretary Datuk Haris Kasim said the revocation applies to Najib’s “Datuk Seri” and “Datuk” titles that were awarded in 2004 and 1992, respectively.
Rosmah, meanwhile, has been stripped of her “Datin Paduka Seri” title, which was conferred in 2005.
The decision was made following consultation with the Selangor Council of the Royal Court and in line with the state constitution.
However, Najib and Rosmah still carry various titles that had been bestowed on them by rulers of other states.
Najib has nine titles from Pahang, Perak, Melaka, Kedah, Perlis, Sabah and Sarawak. Rosmah, meanwhile, has titles from Pahang, Melaka, Kedah, Sabah and Sarawak. – The Vibes, September 15, 2022
