GEORGE TOWN – Penang has allocated up to RM400,000 to purchase new equipment for flood relief as part of precautions ahead of the northeast monsoon season.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the equipment included boats, trucks, life jackets and more than 4,700 tents.
The state has also appointed officials at the five district offices here to be the focal point for flood relief operations.
“They will liaise between the district and the state flood relief operating centres,” Chow told a press conference today to present prizes to participants in the state’s contest to produce short videos for the “I Love Penang” campaign.
He added that local authorities have also been directed to monitor the drainage system, hillslopes and river levels as part of flood preparations.
The public should do their part by not discarding rubbish indiscriminately that would clog drainage systems, as this has been identified as a major reason for flash floods here. – The Vibes, September 21, 2022
